Iranian Handicraft Sales to Hit $1.5 Billion a year

The value of Iran's handicrafts exports to other countries will amount to $1.5bln by the end of the current Iranian year (ending on March 20), which will be a remarkable growth, an official said.

"The 1.5-billion-dollar handicraft export to the other countries will be materialized by the end of the current Iranian year," Director-General of the Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organization (CHTHO) for Trade Ahmad Balan said on Sunday.

Once exports amount to the abovementioned figure in the end of the year, the volume of Iran's handicrafts exports will have witnessed an increase of 300 percent compared with the last year, he added.

The official further pointed out that "most Asian and East European nations are the target markets of Iran's handicrafts exports".

Iran's handicrafts industry covers a truly wide array of items, but Persian Carpet is for sure the most well-known item among them, given its unique designs and also its high quality standards.

Earlier this year, Deputy of Iran's National Carpet Center Mojtaba Feizollahi announced that Iran exported $560mln worth of hand-woven carpets in the last Iranian year (March 21, 2011 to March 19, 2012).

He said that the country exports its carpets to more than 50 countries including Germany, Italy and Japan.

He noted that Iran exported more than $560 million worth of Persian hand-woven carpets last Iranian year

Iran is the leading exporter of hand-woven carpets. Persian rugs are highly sought out for their intricate design and skilled craftsmanship, and that's why Iran exports carpets to more than 100 countries in the world.

Carpet-weaving is undoubtedly one of the most distinguished manifestations of the Persian culture and art, and dates back to ancient Persia.

There is an estimated population of 1.2 million weavers in Iran producing carpets for domestic markets and international export.

The country produces about five million square meters of carpets annually of which 80 percent are sold in international markets.

The United States, Europe (specially Germany and Italy), China, Brazil, South and Central Africa, along with neighboring countries are the most important markets for Iranian made Persian Carpets.
